NT Government Youth Policy

Thank you to all who commented on the draft NT Government Youth Policy, submissions have now closed.

Have your say on NT Youth Policy!
Young Territorians have a major role to play in the development of the Northern Territory. Our growing population consists of a high number of young people aged 12-24 who are spread across a vast geographical area. With this is mind, it is important to recognise the challenges of supporting participation in and delivering services to meet the growing diverse needs of young people.

What you told us
Involving over 200 young Territorians and individuals working within the youth and community sectors Territory wide consultations revealed many thoughtful and considered views relating to education, employment, training, culture, the arts and health. These themes and ideas have been reflected in the draft NT Government Youth Policy.

What we're going to do
The circulation of the consultation paper and draft NT Government Youth Policy will provide young people, Government, youth and the community sector with the opportunity to provide their comments on the draft policy. Feedback provided will feed into the final policy document and ensure it reflects the key directions and goals of young people, and the youth sector in the Northern Territory.

NTG Youth Policy Framework

Building a Better Future for Young Territorians, the Northern Territory Government's (NTG) Youth Policy Framework guides the delivery of programs and services to young people aged 12 to 25 years.

The framework contains key principles that have been developed to underpin policies, programs and service delivery for young people. These principles are:

Respect
Diversity
Access
Empowerment
Equity
Co-ordination.

The framework comprises five key directions to guide service delivery to young people and identifies priority actions against each direction. The directions are:

- improve young people's health and well being
- improve access to education and employment for young people
- provide more opportunities for young people to have fun and develop new skills
- make sure that young people are able to participate in decisions that affect their lives
- create communities where young people can feel safe and secure.

Thanks to the many young Territorians, youth and community organisations and NTG agencies that contributed to the development of the framework.

Building a Better Future for Young Territorians - Progress Reports
The Progress Report outlines progress to date against each of the key directions in the youth policy framework as well as any new initiatives which have been developed in response to emerging needs and evidence based best practice.
