NT Women's Awards in Human Rights

NT Council for Human Rights Education together with other community organisations will be organising an Awards Nights on 9 March 2012 to recognise women in the Northern Territory who have contributed to the development of human rights.

More information on the nomination criteria.  

The nomination closing date has been extended to 27 February 2012 COB.

We are also pleased to announce that Samah Hadid,  2010 Australian Youth Representative to United Nations, will be our guest speaker for the night. The event will also welcome participation of women from detention.

Have your say on Women's Policy

The Office of Women’s Policy invites all women in the Alice Springs region to attend a forum to discuss issues relevant to women, share their vision for the future, and help shape the Northern Territory
Government’s new policy for women.

The forum will be held at the Crowne Plaza, 82 Barret Drive, Alice Springs. There is no cost to attend.
When: Saturday 4 February
Time: 9:30 am for a 10am start, concluding at 2pm

Get Involved in Constitutional Recognition

Want to come to Sydney and learn more about Constitutional Recognition and work with other young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians to develop a youth driven campaign - well here's your chance!

The National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) is looking for young Indigenous Australian from each state and territory to take part in the Constitutional Recognition Forum for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

So what are the details?

When: Wednesday 14 March - Saturday 17 March
Where: NCIE, 180 George St, Redfern NSW

To be eligible to participate you must:
• Identify as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian
• Be aged between 16-25 years
• be available to attend the forum from 14-17 March 2012

Travel, accommodation and transfers will be provided for each participant. To apply, visit the NCIE website and tell us a bit about yourself (in a bio or short resume - and send us 500 words about why you want to participate in the Forum.

Women's Award in Human Rights

International Women’s Day 2012, in conjunction with the NT Council for Human Rights Education is organising an Awards Night on Friday 9 March at Charles Darwin University from 6pm-9pm. The purpose of this public event is to recognise Territory women who have made significant contribution to the advancement of human rights. The event will also welcome guest speaker Samah Hadid, 2010 Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations, who will speak about the role of women in human rights.

If you would like nominate an outstanding young women who is working towards advancing human rights, there are six award categories to nominate under based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948.

A Chance of A Lifetime!

The New York City Marathon is one of the toughest and biggest running events in the world, with 48,000 runners, two million cheering spectators and 315 million worldwide television viewers. If you are an Indigenous man or woman aged between 18 and 30, this could be your chance of a lifetime!

If selected, you will be:
• Coached and supervised by Australian marathon champion, Rob de Castella
• Required to attend a number of training camps around Australia during the year
• Undertake a special Certificate III in Community Recreation - Indigenous Health

Applicants should be willing to inspire other young Indigenous men and women, and have an interest in wanting to make a difference by promoting a healthy lifestyle. If this is you or someone you know please fill in the application form which can be found on the link below.

Hendo's BASSINTHEGRASS T-Shirt Competition

In 2011 a BASSINTHEGRASS design a T-shirt competition was introduced, the winning design went into production as the official BASSINTHEGRASS souvenir sold at the event. Jordan Vickers, Year 11 student at O’Loughlin College won the competition in 2011. The competition is open to all Territory school students and is judged by the Chief Minister.

NYW beyondblue Grant Round Open Now!

The Office of Youth of Affairs in partnership with beyondblue: the national depression initiative, is pleased to announce that one-off funding is available to run National Youth Week (NYW) 2012 Opening or Closing Celebrations. The NYW celebrations will be held from Friday 13 April until Sunday 22 April 2012.

Youth service providers, young people, local government, and non-government organisations are invited to form partnerships to apply for funding to conduct Opening or Closing Celebrations during NYW. All Opening and Closing Celebrations funded must have a focus on positive mental health messages including Youthbeyondblue's call to action 'Look, Listen, Talk and Seek Help!'.

With the spotlight on young Territorians, NYW 2012 is a great opportunity to promote the importance of positive mental health among young people.

National Day of Action against Bullying

On Friday 16 March 2012, schools throughout Australia will join together to celebrate the annual National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. The focus of the day will be on parents and families taking a stand together with school communities and recognising the important role everyone plays.

A range of promotional materials are available to download from the Bullying. No Way! website. Spread the message and get involved!

2012 Science and Engineering Challenge for Youth

The Science and Engineering Challenge is a joint project managed by Engineers Australia Northern Division and supported by Charles Darwin University. Created and run on the day by the University of Newcastle, the Science and Engineering Challenge is a fun day of competition designed to demonstrate the varied possibilities science and engineering offer as a profession.

Registration for the Darwin / Alice Springs challenge will open in February.

The 2012 Science and Engineering Challenge will be held at the following dates:

• Darwin - Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 May

• Alice Springs - Tuesday 8 May

Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards

The Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards offers Musicians aged 18 – 30 the chance to leap to the next level, with a trip of a lifetime to the CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival in October 2012. You'll also be offered a professional mentorship with internationally recognised producer, songwriter and engineer Lee Groves, and $5,000 cash.

The AYF will use your ideas from this discussion topic, and the previous one on mental health, in a submission on behalf of young people to a House of Representatives Standing Committee on Education and Employment – Inquiry into mental health and workforce participation.

Heywire 2011 Winners Announced!

Heywire is a competition calling on young people aged 16-22 to submit stories in text, pictures, film or audio, about life in Australia outside the major cities. Some of Australia’s most creative and passionate young people have been recognised with the announcement of the 2011 Heywire winners, including Youth Round Table’s own Alpha Capaque! Sponsored by the Australian Government, including the Australian Youth Forum, 2011 marks the fourteenth year of Heywire, an initiative of the ABC that provides a platform for the stories, aspirations and ideas of regional youth.

Youth Led Inclusion Project Grants

Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC) is Australia's non-governmental national youth affairs peak body for young people and the youth sector that supports them. As part of its core work, AYAC is committed to building capacity of young people party by championing and investing in youth led organisations. In 2012, AYAC invites youth led organisations to apply for one of six one-off grants of up to $2500 for projects, events, activities and programs that broaden their involvement of engaged young people.

The news is out, Ms Lauren Moss of Leanyer has been selected to represent the NT on the AYF Steering Committee! This year, the Steering Committee members will be instrumental in making sure young people know how they can have their voices heard at the Federal Government level in the most effective way possible.

Where are they now? Round Table Alumni Report

Since 1997, approximately 240 young people have participated in the Youth Minister’s Round Table of Young Territorians program. To celebrate this achievement, the Office of Youth Affairs (OYA) aims to produce an Alumni publication which will incorporate information provided by past and present members. The Alumni publication will be released in April 2012 and will be made available online. If you would like to contribute to this project, please fill out the following brief questionnaire and return to OYA.

Youth Round Table Publications

The Round Table crew have been very busy in 2011 ensuring young Territorians are informed and have their voices heard. Check out the 2011 Youth Round Table Round About the NT newsletter issues 1 and 2 to find out more about this year's members, what they have been up to and how their community based projects are progressing.

In addition, the 2010 Youth Round Table Annual Report features what the team got involved in during the year and what their community based projects have recommended to the Northern Territory Government.

The You Can Schools Program is a collection scheme for old mobile phones and gives schools the opportunity to not only help young Australians survive cancer and contribute to a greener planet, it is also an easy way to get amazing educational products for free! Talk to your school community in a positive way about the benefits of the campaign and follow this up with a letter from the school to ensure the correct message reaches every household. Remind students that their family, friends and relations all have old phones. Local businesses are another great resource so make sure you let them know how they can help.

To help young people make informed decisions about their privacy, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner has produced private i, a privacy survival guide.

private i covers the privacy issues you may face such as: online social networking, identity theft, the scanning of ID documents at pubs and clubs, ‘blacklists', online shopping, dealing with telemarketers, and responding to requests for personal information. It also discusses the pitfalls to avoid, and where to get help if your privacy has been affected.
